iCloud backup, iPad plugged in, "LOCKED"......

The instructions for backing up the ipad to icloud says, "iPad plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi." My only question is, what does "LOCKED" mean in this context??? I know it does not mean "locking the rotation of the screen." I have not been able to find a single definition of this "locked" in the context of backup to iCloud. I know it has something to do with the "screen shutting off." Does it means it "doesn't want the screen to shut off while backing up, or it does? Confusing.

Thanks for any help, maybe my brain is just not working.

Locked means if you tap the the sleep/power button to put the iPad to sleep. If you are in the act of using the iPad - it is unlocked.

In this case - the screen needs to "shut off" for the backup to take place. You cannot be actively using the iPad and have it automatically back up with iCloud.
