Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Macbook crashing daily, no idea why. Possible hardware problem?

For the last few months my mid-2010 macbook pro has been crashing occasionally. It started off about once a week, but now it has gotten to the point where it happens more than once every 24 hour period. When it crashes, the screen freezes and loops the last second of audio that was playing for about 15 seconds, then reboots.

It was happening when I was on Lion initially, and still happened once I upgraded to Mountain Lion. I thought the OS might be an issue, so I erased my hard drive and installed a fresh version of Mountain Lion, then restored my data from my time machine. This did not help or change the problem in any way.

At the bottom of my post is the error report that it sends to Apple when the computer restarts.

Someone please help me, I'm afraid my computer is about to die and I need it for work on a daily basis.

Have you tried running the Apple hardware diagnostics?

Take a printout of this article, describing a special recall program for MacBook Pro 6,2 models:

TS4088- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

They should run a special diagnostic, possibly called "VST"? Do not leave until they have run the special diagnostic and showed you the large PASSED or FAILED result screen. If it FAILED, motherboard replacement is covered under that program.

If it PASSED but is misbehaving, you may need to go back to 10.6.8.

Same issue here. I removed a few 3rd party system enhancements a few days ago and it seemed to stabilize. Today the issue is back... 3 times in 6 hours. I'm a designer - so every time I lose 30 minutes, 2 hrs, etc od photoshop or InDesign work - I want to throw my laptop out the 3rd story window.

If it FAILED, motherboard replacement MAY be covered under that program.

If it PASSED but is misbehaving, you may need to go back to 10.6.8.

Hi! Thanks for you info! We had this problem for over 1,5 years. Genius bar tested our MBP in November 2012 and said the test hasn't showed any problem. Now I want to go there one more time with this article, but 3 years from our date of purchase have gone several months ago. Does it mean that they will refuse me to change the logicboard for free?

Nov 15, 2013 9:46 AM in response to Fityulina

This information might help you. The test they initially ran on my computer (while it was under warranty) did not show the computer to be covered by the replacement program. I brought the computer in over a year later to see how much repair costs would be (and to have them test it again, just in case something went wrong the first time). They ran the test again and this time it showed the computer to be covered under the replacement program, but mine wouldn't be replaced since it was more then 3 years from the purchase of the computer. I pointed out to them that I brought it in over a year ago for the same problem, and it shouldn't be my fault they didn't test it correctly the first time, so they agreed and fixed it for free.

Sorry if that was a little bit incoherent, it's early in the morning for me and I'm sick. Hope that helps!

The standard procedure, before the program described in:

TS4088- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

... was and is to use keep the User's MacBook running the standard diagnostic in a loop overnight. No fault found and it went back to the customer unmodified.

But the problems with a certain batch of MacBook Pro 6,2 was not a fault in the usual sense -- it was a latent defect that for most users only started to cause trouble when 10.8 was installed and it began to use the Graphics chip in a different way.

The standard diagnostic did not find this latent defect. Apple had to write a different diagnostic, the VST test, which you would not have encountered until recently, and sometimes you would not have encountered it at all unless you asked for it, or clubbed them over the head with the paper copy of that article.

Nov 15, 2013 4:32 PM in response to Fityulina

VST test only runs for a minute or two. They may have to run another test to set it up, but the point is that it is not onerous to run on-the-spot and show you the dramatic PASSED or FAILED results screen.

If they keep your MacBook overnight, they might only do the "overnight bake" loop of the regular diagnostic, which will not find the latent defect.

Nov 16, 2013 4:26 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Here are the results...we tried the VST test twice, and both times the window telling about the start of a test appeared and...disappeared, and there was no any movements. They took my laptop to a Genie room. In several hours they called and said, that test failed, and even though 3 years have gone, they would make an exception for our situation! Woohoo! 2 years of this annoying problem are gonna finish! Thank you all, guys!

Macbook crashing daily, no idea why. Possible hardware problem?
