Macbook crashing daily, no idea why. Possible hardware problem?

For the last few months my mid-2010 macbook pro has been crashing occasionally. It started off about once a week, but now it has gotten to the point where it happens more than once every 24 hour period. When it crashes, the screen freezes and loops the last second of audio that was playing for about 15 seconds, then reboots.

It was happening when I was on Lion initially, and still happened once I upgraded to Mountain Lion. I thought the OS might be an issue, so I erased my hard drive and installed a fresh version of Mountain Lion, then restored my data from my time machine. This did not help or change the problem in any way.

At the bottom of my post is the error report that it sends to Apple when the computer restarts.

Someone please help me, I'm afraid my computer is about to die and I need it for work on a daily basis.

Have you tried running the Apple hardware diagnostics?

This line in the crash report:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f80bf5c85): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error

Indicates that you may have a graphics card Hardware failure. The NVIDIA V-RAM (display RAM) cannot be read.

You did not post the complete report, so I cannot see whether you have graphics "helper" stuff from third-parties that may contribute to this problem.

Aug 17, 2012 2:27 PM in response to adamrust1

If you have not deliberately loaded a lot of third-party graphics "helpers" (I do not mean Safari Plug-ins) then you have a Hardware failure. Unfortunately, the graphics chip is soldered on the motherboard, and cannot be replaced separately. You are probably looking at replacing the motherboard.

But don't take my word for it. Make an appointment at the Genuis Bar for a free evaluation -- in warranty or out. Then you will know where you stand.

You have some classic "Bad actors" installed, but I don't think they can cause this problem:

com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.8

net.telestream.driver.TelestreamAudio 1.0.5

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.5.1

Pace support is an anti-theft software that is installed (often without your knowledge) to keep you from stealing things. It has been trouble-prone.

None of those others should have any impact on display Hardware.

Hello Adam,

I had the exact same problem. I had random reboots, black screens when i opened my lid after my macbook was sleeping and random logouts.

It isn't the logic board at all.

My macbook was worse than windows 95. Seriously it actually was... no joke.

Anyhow I took my macbook to the apple store and they did reinstall of mountain lion. It hasn't crashed once and it's so stable now. One week not an issue. Before it would be almost every 2 to 3 hours.

When they do the reinstall for you it does not impact your current setup. It will be like you never left your macbook.

Hope this helps.
