You know the signs you see when you're not supposed to do something or go somewhere in this area? The sign with the circle and line through it? Well, I got that sign on startup one day on my iBook G3. I'd never seen that one before so I started with assuming that my RAM stick needed to be re-seated. Did it and restarted. Same thing. Took it out. Restarted. Same thing. Next, I removed the Airport Card. Booted up normally. Replaced Airport Card. Booted up normally. Have any of you seen this symbol before? Was it just a coincidence?

Hi Pagasasdn,

Welcome to Apple Discussions

You might want to look at Knowledge Base Document #106805 on Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts. Did you get a Kernel Panic ( Knowledge Base Document #106227 on What's a "kernel panic"? (Mac OS X)). If you did, next time you should log it and you can put some lines in Apple Discussions. That way, we can try and help troubleshoot your problem ( How to Log a Kernel Panic from Knowledge Base Document #106228).

Apple calls the sign you saw a "prohibitory sign."

From http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464:

Mac OS X 10.3 only: If the issue only occurs once in a while (intermittently), do this after a successful startup:
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder.
Type the following without quotes: "/System/Library/Extensions/".
Press Return.
In the Extensions window, locate the file named BootCache.kext.
Delete the BootCache.kext file. You may be prompted for an administrator password.
The next time you start up, the startup process could take a little longer than usual as the BootCache.kext file is recreated.

But I can find nothing about the prohibitory sign in OS X 10.4.
