Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I get a message that another machine on my network is using my computers name. It renames my machine by adding 1 to the previous name. I only have one other computer on my network and it uses a different name. When it gets to 40, I change back to the orginal name in the sharing preferences. Any idea as to what is going on?

Same here-- pretty much. Mine is stuck at "John Wiedman's iMac (2)", it hasn't changed since the initial change. I have no other machines running on my network. And I have NO luck changing the name back to what it was before.
Everything is working alright otherwise-- but tjis sin't what it's supposed to be, and I don't like it.

Okay... this is embarassing. After spending a bunch of time with an Apple tech representative I figured out the problem:
After changing the name of the computer (System Preferences/Sharing), I was clicking on the lock icon to prevent further changes (as though I was saving what I had done when changing the name). THAT was the problem!
The RIGHT thing to do was to simply close out of preferences to save the name change! Clicking on the lock un-did the name change!
So simple...
Thank you -- I was able to change my computer name back to "Joel's Mac Mini" from "Joel's Mac Mini (2)" by following the process you specify.
