Hang on Install of Mountain Lion

Hi;

I have two machines with Lion installed. I'm moving to Mountain Lion. I successfully installed ML on my Air but I'm having problems on my MBPro. It's an Intel Pro with enough space and RAM.

I've backed up and turned off virus and malware programs. Several times I've tried to install but the install stalls at the window that says "installation will take about 34 minutes". The progress bar does not appear and does not move. I've had to relaunch under the HD each time.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Is your MBP a compatible model? Processor, space and RAM aside, there are only certain models ML will actually work with.

Supported
Models

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

Since you say you have an Intel Pro (do you mean Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo?), I think you might have an older MBP. I think the earliest processor that is supported is the Core 2 Duo. Mountain Lion is a fully 64-bit operating system. Earlier MacBookPros are 32-bit.

Well, that was interesting. I did a disk verify and two directory counts were off, so the dialog said to restart with a command-R to select disk utility and repair. I did that and when I release the keys at the Apple icon, it spins and then settles on the kernel panic icon and I have to do a power off and restart.

Can I get to disk utility another way?

Funnily enough I had the same problem yesterday.. tried 10 times but installer kept hanging at 34mins as well.. I noticed that while it was loading it was accessing the DVD drive.. with nothing in it then hanging.. I put in an installer disk for Snow Leopard, and the ML installer loaded and installed.. don't ask me why, no idea but give it a try..

Thanks. I'll try the trick with the DVD. I think I've got an old one kicking around.

I managed to get the permissions fixed using Drive Genius. But it wouldn't repair the drive. I'll try the DVD hack first to see if that's it.

I'm away from that machine for two weeks now, so I'll try the fixes then.

Thanks to all who replied.

Hi;

I did the drive cleanup and tried to install, but got the same weird hang. Then I tried using the DVD trick and it initially continued to stall at 34 minutes, but I just walked away from it eventually and went to the grocery store and when I got back an hour later it had started to install and eventually went through the full routine and installed.

Not sure what finally worked, but it's done.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.
