I am traveling from New Zealand to the US for a couple of months. What I am planning to do is buy a sim card in the US when I get there but I won't have a computer to connect the phone to iTunes. Will voice and data work if I don't?

That's a good idea Amy. However, if I can I'd like to bypass having to use a computer altogether. Is this possible?
It depends on which OS your phone is using. And which carrier. Some carriers have wireless activation, and only iOS 5 does activation wirelessly, I believe
A lot of people forgot that a computer is listed as a requirement for having an iOS device. It's definitely a sure-fire way to get done what you need to get done

I was thinking I would use the carrier, "Staight Talking".
However, I just found out that I can't use a personal iphone4 hotspot (tethering) with this company.
You see, I will be riding a bicycle across country and want to keep a blog using my ipad (phone is too small to see spelling mistakes properly). I wanted to use my iphone to take my photos and to use as, what I call, a wifi router - for lack of its proper name.

Ah, if you have an iphone 4, you won't be able to activate the phone wirelessly. It has to be an iphone 4s
Hum,.......I am able to use the "personal hotspot" function on my phone in New Zealand. It's just that when I made enquiries to a couple of carriers in the USA they said that it wasn't allowed and wouldn't work.
