My friend's iPhone was stolen today and she quickly suspended her cellular service. Does that mean Find My iPhone wont work?? Or will it still work because the GPS is separate from cellular data? She's in iCloud right now trying to find it and has been unsuccessful so far.
It will still work if connected to the internet via wi-fi.
I think Find my iPhone works on wifi as well. So if the phone ever connects to Wifi, you may be able to find it. Curious, did she have a passcode lock on it as well? That might provide some security.

Well that's good. The perp can't access the the personal, bank, and credit card info on the phone. Keep monitoring the iCloud Find my iPhone application for the next couple days and see if it shows up. I think you can set iCloud to do an automatic wipe if the phone is detected.
Does she want to recover the phone, or is she willing to "burn" the phone? The iPhone 5 is coming out in September, so you could get her a nice Christmas gift, ya know....
My phone was stolen. I just spoke to my carrier (Rogers) and they said I can suspend my phone services so no voice or data can be used, but I can still track it via Find my iPhone (assuming the phone is turned on). They said that functionality goes through Apple, not the carrier. Is this correct?

The reason why 'find my iphone' might not be working is that the phone is either 1. powered off (won't send a GPS signal), 2. not connected to wifi, or 3. signed out of your friend's apple id
