I have an apple tv 2 and an older tv - is there an hdmi convertor to audio and video input?

There are but no guarantee it will work. HDMI is the only supported method.
Regardless you wouldn't be able to view HDCP content (i.e. iTunes, Netflix etc.) and if using an SDTV you will have issues relating to resolution and aspect ratio
