Random jpg files not displaying on 10.8

I have an iMac running 10.8, a pre upgrade image created using super duper for this same computer and a mac pro running 10.7. I'm getting random pictures that have not changed for years showing "unsupported image format" in Aperture and they also don't display in preview or finder. Same picture (stored in the super duper backup) will show without issue on the mac pro running 10.7. I haven't seen a pattern with files it supports without issue and those that don't but there appears to be a bug with mountain lion. Side note, I encrypt the hard drive for the imac and SD backup using Apples encryption software. Has anyone else seen this or know of any bug? Nothing came up when I was looking around.

I think I've noticed the same issue. For example, pretty much every jpg that's been recently posted to this guy's blog -- http://www.youhaventlived.com/qblog/ -- no longer shows up in safari for me, but is fine in chrome / firefox. If I download one of the afflicted jpgs to my computer, finder won't show a thumbnail for it (it just displays the generic "jpg" icon), quicklook won't show it, and preview says the file is invalid. Meanwhile, other apps (such as photoshop, and the aforementioned web browsers) will load these jpgs fine... and my older mac (still running snow leopard) has no problems with them either.

Must be some particularly obtuse/slightly-non-standard jpg format that 10.8 isn't happy with.

Has there been any progress on this issue?

I just ran into it today, where a JPEG uploaded to my site does not display in Safari but displays fine in Firefox, Chrome and Opera.

I could NOT open it in "Preview" - but was able to use ImageMagick to "convert" the file to a jpeg (*same extension/file type*) which made it viewable by Safari.

Apple support did come back and "resolve" the issue. What I found was it fixed most of my jpegs but I still see pictures in aperture from time to time that are not displaying correctly. I still need to update the bug report and notify them that they still have issues and send them an updated jpeg with problems. I would suggest you open a ticket with them as well as it appears they haven't fixed everything yet. I'm currently on the latest version of 10.9 and 10.7 seems to be the last solid OS with regard to jpeg imaging.
