Try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. To find that Library folder, use Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart.
Next, make sure that you are not connected to the internet. Then go to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder and remove any files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Use the same method as listed above to get to the correct Library Folder. Log out/in, or restart and check iCal for functionality.

Aug 19, 2012 6:21 AM in response to cbsmith66by cbsmith66,Fred, tried all this and still locks up. If I log off wireless, ical works. It is like it is stuck trying to update somewhere. I have also gone into my calendars that sync and unchecked enable and that does not help either.

Aug 5, 2013 5:38 AM in response to cbsmith66by Jeffrey Anderson,I had this problem -- I have one subscribed calendar and an exchange synced calendar. When I saw this post, I tried the following and it resolved it:
1. Force Quit iCal
2. Disconnect all network connections (for me it was just the ethernet cable, wifi was off already)
3. Start iCal (it started whereas previously hung)
4. Tooled around preferences to see if icloud sync was there --- it is somewhere else anyway
5. Plugged in the ethernet cable
6. watched the title bar say it was syning - it added a calendar entry
7. works, even after ical restart

Ferd II, thank you. Your suggested solution worked for me and my mid-2006 iMac.
