What's the difference between highlighting and checkboxes?

In the iTunes listing there is a checkbox next to each item. What is it used for? How does it differe from just selecting songs?

Where can I find out what the bullets mean as the iPod updates? There seems to be no reference to this in the help files or manual.

Thanks

There is an option within the iPod preferences to only update checked songs. In iTunes the check boxes have a few uses for instance:
Unchecked songs will be skipped when playing songs in the library, they will only play when individually clicked on. Unchecked songs will not be burned to CD etc. There's more information on check boxes and other stuff here "iTunes: Understanding the Symbols Next to Songs" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93078
