Can't Change Track Info in iTunes
The track information on songs is grayed out and can't be changed? Is there a setting to fix this? I notices that if I made an mp3 copy of a track, that was editable.

Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownneship from an account with administror privileges.

I had the same problem. The above approach did not work for me (or maybe I did it incorrectly). But I did find a way to un-grey my greyed-out info fields: Select multiple songs (or videos), and the info becomes available for adjustments. More specifically, I:
- selected all the files I wanted to change (but could not)
- right clicked on the selected files
- selected "get info" from the menu that appeared
- iTunes asked me "are you sure you want to edit information for multiple items?" I said yes.
- this ungreyed the options and allowed me to change the fields
Now obviously, if you do this, you end up making changes to more than one file simultaneously. That was OK for many of my purposes. However, I did want to change unique things for individual files (such as track number). To do this, I clicked on a file whose info was not greyed out (so I could change it back later) and then clicked on the file that I wanted to change. Then I made changes (which meant changing both files). Then I went back to the file that was not greyed out and reverted the information back to where it was before the changes.
Instead of using a valuable non-greyed-out file as your second file, you could create a dummy file (or use one that you don't care about). That way you could just delete the file after you made all your changes rather than revert the information back.
Have you checked that the changes have actually taken? iTunes can appear to accept a change, then when you play the track it may reveal the original unchanged information... The greyed out window is only displayed for single tracks, and not for multiple, even if they happen to be locked against change.

This is what worked for me (I found the answer on another website). FInd the file of the music you want to edit in Windows Explorer; Right click the folder icon and select "Properties"; a small box will pop-up and should be open to the 'general' tab. You should see a small box that says "Read-only (only applies to files in folder)" click on the box to the left of these words, deselecting the option, and click OK. It may take some time to process the request depending on the size of the folder. You should now be able to change the info of the songs that were in that folder.
It seems like every Itunes update makes the program less user friendly and accessible. Is Apple trying to get us to switch to another MP3 player?

Wow - thank you for this trick. I agree with you on the user friendly thing.
Actually, after doing it a few times on individual songs, I then went to my highest level directory for Explorer for all of my music & used your method. It unlocked every song that was "grayed" & that I could not change. This also worked for the Album Artwork copy/paste from various sources.
Again- thanks!
Make sure the file is not checked as read only in the windows explorer (if on a PC)
This didn't work (I'm using Windows 7)
THANK YOU!!!!!
