Macbook Retina cracking sound when muted

Hey guys,

I just found that my Macbook Pro with Retina display makes a litle cracking sound when trying to play an alert, even when muted.

Not sure if it's an issue or a normal behaviour.

You can check if yours makes this as well when turn off the sound and make your mac play an alert sound, e.g. go to System preferences and press cmd+j (this is an invalid shortkey that's why it will try to play an alert sound). The cracking sound is not really loud so listen carefully.

Please let me know how it went.

The local AppleStore is really far away from me so I don't want to lose a day for invalid issue, that's why I need your help.

Thank you!

I can't notice a flash.

As far as I can understand this, I think it's happening after the sound card (or so) is ideling for a while (1-2 sec).

The cracking sound is heard no matter what kind of a sound the OS plays.

I read similar discussions, the famous "popping/cracking sound" but I'm not sure if this problem exists in all mbpr, or I'm a lucky owner of one.

I just got off the phone with Apple support. They said that this is defeintely a new problem. So they pretty much set me an appointment for tomorrow at my nearest Apple Store. The guy on the phone also told me to do the headphones test, yeah it's the same for me.. the noise disappears.

It's a shame really, I'd thought my mac wouldn't have any of the listed problems that others get.. except I.. well we... get new ones.

just an update... a few hours later... my backlit keyboard refuses to light up.. what the heck?

Time to Return it for a new, properly working, MBP.

And as to the Tech guy saying "This is a New Problem", "Never Heard of it Before". That is what they always say even if it has been reported Thousands of times and written about in printed and On Line Mags.

Only after Apple has made a publix ackownledgement of the problem, and plan on trying to fix it (which sometimes they never plan on fixing a problem and never make a public acknowledgement) will the phone techs say "Ok yes we know about it".

So after meeting with them, they said there was something wrong with the Speakers and they offered a new machine or just a replacement of the speakers. As right now, there's nothing wrong with my system so I said to just replace the speakers. In my mind, it's the right thing. I can't get a new system because they don't have any in stock and they said to call through the apple store ... so to wait another 3-4 weeks to deliver. I'd rather not wait because I'd be using my laptop in school in less than 3 weeks. They let me keep my machine untill the parts come in.. and then go back in for the repair.
