Error -8971

could not open a file with quicktime, instead got this error ' Error -8971 '

i manually changed extension of a .mov to a .3gp (the actual codecs used for the audio and video work with quicktime when the movie is a .mov)

does anyone know what is causing this?

I've tried exporting the .mov file to .3gp multiple times, and QT is unable to do this properly. It shows me both audio and video tracks, but when I play it, the video does not work. It plays for 2 seconds and then stops (the audio plays fine...). This happens when I try and export anything in QT to 3gp (using H.263 and AMR NB)

do you have any suggestions for how to fix this problem?

First, try it with another video to make sure its not just that file... if you need some known-good files to test with try these:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75424

Next... what settings are you using...

Here are the settings I used for testing, the original file was video only, no audio and plays fine.

QuickTime Player > File menu > Export

Save exported file as...
test.3gp

Export: Movie to 3G
Click Options

3G Export Settings
Video format: H.264 Optmized for: Download
Data Rate: 64 kbits/sec
Image Size: 320x240 QVGA
Frame Rate: 15
Key frame: Automatic

click "Video Options"
H.264 Video Options
Encoding Mode: best

Streaming:
Enable
Maximum packet size 1450 bytes
Maximum packet duration: 100 msec

Ok, I'm with you now. I just tried exporting a video with audio as H.263 and AMR NB. The movie plays, the video stalls frequently (even in MPlayer.)

So I changed the settings and got much better results...
H.263
64 kbits/sec
176x144 QCIF
Frame rate: 10
Key frame every: 30

Audio
AMR-NB
7.4 kbps
Mono
8.000 kHz
Best encoding
5 frames per sample

Nothing on in text, streaming or advanced.

Movie plays smooth and the video frames look considerably better than the previous H.263 export that stalled a lot.

So I tried it with the last settings that you gave me. The only difference between those and the previous ones I was trying was the video data rate (I was doing 20-30 vs 64).

My problem is that I need my file to be as small as possible. The higher the data rate, the larger it is. But clearly the problem was that I tried it with a data rate that was much to low for it to handle.

Thanks a lot for your help.
