I've downloaded the installer for Mountain Lion, but it won't install to my HD. I use a separate USD drive for Time Machine, which I ejected before trying the install (it wouldn't work before I restarted after trying with the USB drive attached).

What are the specs of your iMac?

What does it do when you try to install it? Is there a message that comes up? And if so, what does it say?

After I gree to the T&Cs both my HD and Time Machine drives are grayed out and when I click on the HD, I get a simple message that "the OS cannot be installed on this drive." No other information.
Press Command and R keys in boot, open Disk Utility, select the volume and repair disk
Tried that, also tried repairing permissions. Have discovered that my iMac won't even let me reinstall snow leopard--same issue: : "can't use HD as startup drive"
Thanks. This appears to have solved my problem. Mountain Lion has installed. It is bit disquieting that my Mac seems to have lost info on the Time Machine backups I did under the old OS.
