Here's an older cure I'd try...
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

Hi! I did Safe Boot. When I go to HD, then users, then my user name, I don't see library in that folder. It see the choices of Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public.
Also used Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions on HD. I checked if things worked ok in Safe mode and they still didnt. There was also a file name ST31000528AS Media in Disk Utility that I could select for repair, but didn't. I repaired Disk EPrmissions for Macintosh HD.
THere should be at least three Library folders, one in each User's folder, one at root, & one in System!???
Mountain Lion hid the users Library. Go/Go to Folder & type:~/Library. Your users will be revieled.
now I found the users library. I see those files now. Things still don't work in safe mode. Do you want me to put these files from the preferences on the desktop while I'm in safe mode (while things still arent working) and reboot?

Hello again. After rebooting my computer a few times, things seem to be working normally, so thank you very much!! I didn't move those particular files to the desktop. Since everything is working I don't I need to, unless you think I should still do it?

Every time I create a new folder on my iMac desktop, the folder immediately copies every other folder and file on my desktop, so that I now have multiple, unwanted copies of every folder taking up memory. What caused this and how do I fix it? Thanks.
