Matched Pair of Ram Sticks ?

I checked the discussion questions and answers and they are from 2006. So I will ask again for mid-2011 iMac.

Just received my 27" iMac with 4 gig of ram (2x2 sticks). Is it okay to add 8 gig more (2x4 sticks)? Or is it necessary to match the ram 4 iMac ram slots with the same amount of ram (4x4 sticks)? Will 12 gig unmatched pair vs 16 gig matched pair make a difference?

Thank you

In my iMac I've got the original 2 x 2gb sticks. I subsequently added 2 x 4gb in the other two slots and have been running with 12gb for over a year. At one point I went from 4gb to 8gb and the difference was very noticeable, I then went from 8 to 12gb and I didn't notice the same margin of improvement. 12gb works really well for me, but I guess it depends what you do on your Mac.

If you buy RAM from OWC or Crucial I think they might buy the RAM you no longer need off you.
