Hello,
Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, my hdd seems to be working non-stop. Does anyone know what causes this and how to stop it? It's very annoying and makes me concermed about what may be wrong.
Would appreciate any help.

Spotlight indexing? The OS's autosave/versioning/resuming process? Provide some details on what you're running and doing, then we might be able to track it down. Alternatively, launch Activity Monitor, select all processes, and click on Disk Activity.
Thanks for the reply. I'm not too savvy on a lot of this stuff yet, but I did as you suggested and it seems that is ReportCrash that is causing the issue. I am unable to Force Quit this process. Hopefully the info pasted below will make some sense?

I am not running anything other than standard home computing programs/apps. My anti-virus does not report any issues, and MacKeeper doesn't report anything other than a few junk files. Powering off the modem does not change the mount of activity either, so probably safe to discount an internet issue.
This issue is present from the moment the computer is switched on and did not happen before I installed Mountain Lion.
I'm a bit of a novice with the iMac, I appreciate your help on this, helps me learn as well. By all means, please suggest where I might go from here.

Post the entire crash report. Usually resides in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports? or in your hidden /username/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/.
