After you download, use this to create a thumb-drive installer to make re-install easier in case the Recovery Partition is unusable: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3467451?answerId=16639520022#16639520022
Also *please* make a good Clone (CarbonCopyClone $40 or SuperDuper $30 download) to external drive in case you need to re-install SL (you may want to go back, or you may need to start over in case of failed ungrade).

You buy an installer from Apple Store, but you have to buy it over the phone. They then send you a link to download it and it will show in Apple Store after you download.
I also followed instructions on web to extract the ISO image off the installer and burn a DVD backup in case need to restore/reinstall later on.
How much did it cost?
20 USD. A fair price, though not lower than upgrading to latest OS, one might hope that it would have been half off, etc.
