WarCraft 3, Diablo 2, and StarCraft working for Mountain Lion (10.8)?

Hello.

Just switched to Mac from PC. I am interested in installling all my older single player games, such as WarCraft 3, DIablo 2, and StarCraft. My first question is: If i installed these games, will they work on Mountain Lion(10.8)? My second: If they wont work, I was researching that I could partition an external hard drive for an older OSX version(10.6 or 10.7) patch the game to its latest version, then launch the game form the hard drive. Or transfer the game to my Mac with the updated version. Would that work? Or would there be an easier way? My third: I dont have any later version of OSX(10.6 or 10.7). Its a brand new Mac. Where could i get that partition of the hard drive for an older version?

Sorry if it seems confusing. Has anyone had troubles with this situation? I was researching that there completely stopping support for these games, is that true???

Please respond. Im in no rush, just questions I am pondering..

Thanks Guys..

To all questions: Your games are for windows pc. The only way you're going to play them is to create a windows partition using Boot Camp, installing Windows 7 and then installing the games. (if they are Windows 7 compatible).Or, install a virtual windows program like Parallels, install Windows and then install those pc programs. Or, purchase those games if Mac OS X compatible.

Very cool. Thank you, seriously. I gotta another question. Could I partition an external hard drive for Mac and PC, Install the games on my PC computer and patch them to the current version, transfer them from my older PC to the partioned PC part of the external hard drive, copy them from the PC partition of the external hard drive to my Mac, and play them from my Mac?...

Is that at all plausible?

I'd appreciate another helpful answer.

Lies lies lies, Sig why do you post such monstrosities when your knowledge is only based on assumptions?

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but this is to prevent missinformation.

WarCraft 3, Diablo 2, and StarCraft all work splendid on mac, and have been released for both. There might be some small graphical glitches, but I think they were mostly just in the menu.

If you own them, take your CD key to battle.net (blizzards site) and you can download them for mac. Also your CD's contain Mac versions of the game.

Now everything ain't just peachy, as the games works next to perfect on Lion and Mountain Lion the Installer for the games have not been updated for these two versions of OS X. This is because Snow Leopard and previous OS X version that ran on Intel based x86 and x86_64 processors countained an emulator for PowerPC apps, which worked seamlessly behind the scene. They dropped this on OS X Lion, so there is just a little work to do to get them installed.

Some alternatives to get them installed are:
Installing Snow Leopard in dual boot and copy over your installed games
Installing Snow Leopard in a virtual machine and copy over your installed games
lending a Mac with Snow Leopard and copy over your installed games

You need to re-read the op's original post,

"Just switched to Mac from PC. I am interested in installling all my older single player games, such as WarCraft 3, DIablo 2, and StarCraft. My first question is: If i installed these games, will they work on Mountain Lion(10.8)? "

He is inquiring about his older pc games. Duh, I must have missed that. If you have information to contribute then post it. We all love to learn something.

I'll let slide the rant at the beginning of your post.

Whilst Blizzard did indeed release these games for Intel macs, they don't currently run or install on Lion and Mountain Lion. However, you can install and run the Windows versions using a free open-source tool called Wineskin. I've done this successfully on my 2012 MacBook Pro.

Here's a blog post I made detailing the process: http://marzzbar.wordpress.com/2012/11/06/how-to-play-classic-blizzard-games-on-m ac-os-x-mountain-lion/

You don't need to let anything slide, because he is right, not you. I have these games. Computer games come with keys, you go onto Blizzard's store, sign in, and put in your key. it will give you a digital download in your account, so that you can download the game on any computer you own and sign into. However, like cocytos said, they do not install on Mountain Lion, because it is not PowerPC. the installers either need an update (doubtful) or you need to move an installed copy of the game.

Here is a post that I assembled for a similar question:

Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta. Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.

However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion). While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.

Workarounds:

1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;

2. If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;

3. Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions, or find alternative software that will open your data files;

3. Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:

Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439

NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.

NOTE 2: Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.
