HP Officejet 8500a trying to scan legal size document.

Currently on a 2011 Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. Printer is installed with OSX drivers and works fine printing and scanning letter sized documents.

However I have legal size forms that I need to scan through the ADF. Whenever I scan them through Image Capture, it always reduces the image to fit on a US Letter sized paper. When I pull up the detailed options on Image Capture, the only options it gives me for paper size is either A4 or US Letter so I assume that is the problem.

Is there anything that I am overlooking or is it really not possible to scan legal size docs with this printer on OSX (works fine in windows).

Thanks for the help !

Check with HP for the latest scanner drivers, and to see whether they offer that feature for OSX at all.

I tried this and set the default printer paper to US Legal; however once the actual application comes back up to scan it is still sitting on US Letter with no option for US Legal.

Also, HP is apparently relying on Apple Spftware Update to provide the drivers for their printers in 10.8 so the driver is already the most current that is available 3.3.0

Hi,

Make sure you select the proper paper size.

Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan, select the device and then click the Scanner tab.

Click Open Scanner and then click Show Details to expend the scan settings.

Set the Scan Mode as Document Feeder (Flatbed Mode will only provide you A4 or US Letter sizes) and then set the Size as US Legal.

Click Scan and check for any change.

Hope it help,

Shlomi

That is still not the issue. When pulling up scanner and showing details, if the Document feeder is selected there is only the option for A4 or US Letter. There is not option for US Legal. If you choose Flatbed, there is no option to even choose a paper size.

I have come to the conclusion that this printer/scanner will just not work correctly with OSX and will have to continue using my windows laptop to scan legal documents. Such a pain ..

Hi,

Please go to System Preferences > Print & Scan, Click the plus sign and select the printer - can you see the Use field marked as AirPrint or as the printer model by its default?

Close the windows without adding the printer.

If the Use appear as default, click the right arrow on the printer, select Setup.

Go to Reports and print a printer configuration report.

What is the listed Firmware version of the device?

I have read many of these posts, and I'm very, very surprised how many savvy users are missing the point. In short: the way the software worked in 10.7 Lion versus 10.8 Mountain Lion has changed dramatically.

In Lion, you could scan from the flatbed and select either a standard size (Letter or A4) or a custom size (either via entry or drawing the outline rectangle). This option to select between "standard" or "custom" is now missing from the system.

When you scan from the automatic document feeder (ADF), you don't have a choice in size; the system picks it automatically (whether it's letter or legal size). This worked flawlessly.

Now, it seems to me that Mountain Lion has mixed it up a bit. In fact, it appears to me the only options displayed are the flatbed options. It's almost as though the toggle for the "standard" or "custom" size settings is now being used by the "flatbed" versus "document feeder" pull-down menu, and there is no other pull-down available for sizes. It just seems to me the feature was mis-programmed and is still available in the software (we just need the appropriate pull-down menu.

Anyone else concur?

By the way: I'm running an OfficeJet J6480, and my driver has the same problem.
