Duplicate Voice memos Discovered as Source of 'Other'

I finally discovered the source of the ever-incresaing 'other' storage category on my iPhone: a series of seemingly never-ending duplicates of a couple dozen original voice memos. For as yet unknown reasons, every time I back-up my iPhone, rather than incrementally backing up changes to the voice memos, iTunes/iOS chooses instead to duplicate the exisiting original voice memo. This leads to a creep of, in my case, about 10-15 MBs of data unnecessarily being back-up with each sync. I'm continuing to investigate why this may be occuring. Perhaps it's some weird combination of settings someplace that's telling it to duplicate rather than increment? Anyway, if anyone else has any info on why this might be occuring, please reply. I've since deleted the duplicated voice memos from my phone (using DiskAid). Since I can't delete native iOS apps (without jailbreaking), I guess I'll have to chalk this up to one more reason that I'll consider switching away from the iPhone when it comes time to buy a new phone.

I have the same problem, with about a dozen of occurences of a couple hundred voice memos, and I am not talking about those that I named and were duplicated with their creation date as a title. I had to sort my library by duration and do the picking by hand to do the cleanup. Great time waster!

I searched through this forum, and several similar posts did not even get one single reply. The restore idea may work on the spot, but it did not do anything in the long run as duplicates happen again. Let's hope someone comes up with a solution ;-)

I have had the same problem for 18 months, reaching an "Other" size of 27+ Gb on a 64 Gb iPhone. After weeks of attempts from Apple Support to get it fixed, I explored my iTunes backups with iBackupBot and discovered that the MediaDomain folder was 25+ Gb : digging into it I found in the "Recordings" subfolder several (up to 40) copies of what appeared to be voice memos.

These do not seem to sync properly and to generate duplicates at each sync, resulting in "eating" almost half of my storage capacity.

iBackupBot allows for removal, so I did kill all these duplicates from the iTunes backup and ended up retrieving most of the "Other" space.

Soon after however, I realized that this did not stop duplication to resume at each sync. But at least it allows for reclaiming space when things are getting out of control...

Hope this helps

I am also having this problem. I have gone through two iPhones and the problem remains. I happen to use voice memos a lot and they multiply like bunnies on my iTunes library as well. Very annoying, as iTunes also does not offer a simple way to remove duplicates (they keep the interface so clean that there are no features). I agree this is obnoxious enough to merit changing phones.

(An unrelated annoyance: I recently moved abroad and was forced to upgrade my phone in order to use it here. The removal of Google maps in a foreign place has been so enfuriating that I do not want to continue dealing with this company anymore)

Back on topic, it would be nice to have an easy way stop the endless duplications of voice memos. Thanks.

Here's how I fixed it...

In Diskaid (on the mac/pc), go to the Recordings folder, and delete all the audio files. My "Other" storage dropped dramatically after doing this, and the voice memos no longer show up in iTunes. I am worried about potential problems however; there are a bunch of .plist files in that same folder, and a Recordings.db... I'm going to synch my phone and then ~maybe~ delete those, too, to satisfy my OCD behavior.

Good luck.
