the touch screen is totally non-responsive. only the home, power and volume buttons work. What can I do?

the touch screen on my iPod touch is totally non-responsive. only the home, power and volume buttons work. If i double tap the home button the controls for the music player appear but are equally non-responsive. What can I do?

iPod touch, iOS 5.1.1, 1st generation

Try:

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
