Playback issues can be caused by several things ... or combination of things. Some of the most common causes are:

- Using media in a format or codec that doesn't work natively in FCP. Formats such as H.264 or MPEG-4 must be converted PRIOR to importing into an FCP project.

- Storing media on the boot (system) hard drive, a USB hard drive or a hard drive connected over a network to your Mac. Media should be stored on a 7200 RPM hard drive that is internal (but not the boot drive), or connected by eSATA or Firewire.

- Hard drives not having enough free space; all hard drives should have 10 to 20% free space available, especially the boot drive.

- Adding effect to clips in the Timeline that exceed your system's real time capacity. Rendering fully should restore normal playback.

Also note that in your case, you're running FCP 5 on an OS that it wasn't designed for.
