If it isn't there, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage your Apple ID, sign in, click on Name, ID and Email addresses on the left, then to the right click Resend under your Primary Email Address to resend the verification email. More details here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5404.

That shouldn't be a problem. Many people have Gmail IDs. Apple was having quite a few issues earlier today...perhaps there are still some lingering problems. You might want to try again tomorrow in case it's a problem at Apple's end. If it persists, try contacting the Apple account security team for your country and ask for assistance: Apple ID: Contacting Apple for help with Apple ID account security.

Make sure you are checking the email address you used to set up your iCloud account. Check the spam/junk folder as well as the inbox. If it isn't there, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage your Apple ID, sign in, click on Name, ID and Email addresses on the left, then to the right click Resend under your Primary Email Address to resend the verification email.
