Q: Can't install printer driver: HP Color LaserJet 2605dn drivers "not currently available from the Software Update server"

I was having trouble printing to my HP Color LaserJet 2605dn from a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion, so I went to System Prefernces -> Print & Scan deleted it and atempted to re-add it.  When I try add the printer I get this message:

Software for this printer is available from Apple. Would you like to download and install it?

After clicking Download & Install (the only option other than Cancel), I get this:

Can't install the software for the Hewlett-Packard HP Color LaserJet 2605dn because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.

What's the workaround when Mountain Lion can't find the driver?

Thanks!

Worked for my Lexmark E312! Thanks twilliams4th!

That also stopped the a prompt to install software EVERY time the printer turned on, and the printing of garbage on the first page of every print job. Fantastic! Thanks!

This procedure also worked for me. While resetting my Fritz!Box WLAN router I updated the frimware at the same time. After rebooting the router and my MacBook Pro, adding printers was no problem anymore.

    Thanks a lot, dear twilliams4th!

I was having this problem with re-installing my photo and laserjet printers, and this solution worked like a charm.

I would not recommend downloading and installing the provided drivers (in my case it was the EPSON and HP drivers).  They are about 1.5GB and 500MB in size respectively after install.  I imagine it's every supported driver.  Even then I still couldn't install the printer due to the error message as posted by the OP.  I deleted the EPSON and hp folders especially after seeing the size of the folders.  Then I reset my printer system on the System Preference -> printers -> rigth click on left white panel.  And then I re-added my network printers (via USB hub -> airport extreme base station), and the download and install worked.  The actual size of both of those drivers when installed in his manner is less than 100MB total.  Thanks for the tip.

My wife has a 13' macbook which worked great when it ran 10.6.x osx. I stupidly upgraded her OS to 10.8.4 and that killed any connection to our HP 2605dn printer. Is there any workaround for this? I call HP and get the "Time to pull out that credit card and Spend Spend Spend on a new [and compatible] printer" routine.

is it possible to print to a file, send the file to another networked machine that CAN print to 2605dn and then finish the print job that way?

Brilliant. How did you figure this out? This problem has been around for a LONG time - I'm disappointed Apple hasn't found it and fixed it yet

I have an old HP Photosmart D7360 orginally bought for use as a Windows printer.  When I bought a MacMini with Mountain Lion and installed the printer (via USB), for whatever reason it found a Gutenprint driver that would not recognize the phototray.

After a long evening of frustration, I  read the thread here, downloaded the HP driver from Apple (since I could not find an update via the apple softwoare update channel), loaded it on the  system.

Like others, I found it necessary to reset the printer system via the right click in the printer area.  Then in re-installing the HP printer ia the add printer process, the program found the official HP software and voila I can now use the phototray.

I agree with others that Apple should fix whatever problem is preventing users from directly getting the best HP drivers (even if they are 2 years old or whatever).  One should not have to Google this issue and by luck find this thread that seems to solve the problem.

Many thanks for the gift that keeps on giving -- the solution worked exactly as described for me as well (but no restart needed; running Mountain Lion 10.8.5) with an HP printer. Thank you!!
