I cannot "see" my 2nd gen iPod nano on iTunes 10.6 running on a new iMac with OS Lion.
I have worked through the various troubleshooters to no avail. Have Apple ceased to support the 2nd gen nano?

No. The latest version of iTunes and Mac OS X support all iPod models.
What's on the iPod's display when you have it connected to your Mac? Have you tried a different USB and USB port? Is the iPod powered on when you connect it? Does it still charge when you connect it?

ipod display is "Do not disconnect" with usual red sign - but this message is flashing. The ipod is seen by Finder but not itunes.

iPod does not appear in iTunes or iPod updater in Mac OS X
And perhaps work through all the suggestion here as well?

If say so. Did you noticed anything unusual when working through any of the steps in the articles above? Have you tried using a different USB cable and port?
Is the iPod recognized by another PC or Mac running iTunes?

I have also tried on a MBP running Lion and iTunes 10.6.3 with a different cable and different USB ports. Again all I see is the nano in finder as an external device with folder structure and nothing in iTunes. The "do not disconnect icon" just flashes on the nano screen.
I have an old windows laptop without iTunes which I could try and hook up with the nano but this seems a bit of a retro step!

It does, I'll agree with you there. 😝
I know this may seem like overkill, but perhaps it would be worth it to try and do a low level reformat of the iPod Nano's flash storage. There have been a few others in the past who have had this same issue and were able to resolve it by completing the reformat operation.
