Q: Wanted to purchase and download OS X Mountain Lion.

I wanted to purchase and download OS X Mountain Lion but could not. Message told me that I did not have enough memory to download. I have 1GB of ram but they are saying that I Mountain Lion needs 2 GB. Are they talking desk top memory or what? I do have 17 GB of memory available. What to do?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

They are talking about RAM, not storage. See this, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US It provides you steps to install more RAM. Of course, provided you purchase that ram.

Yes, you need 2GB of RAM. Your 17GB of desktop memory is how much hard drive space you have. They are two separate things. If you select about this mac from the apple menu it should show you how much memory you have.
