Q: Can no-longer import Panasonic RW2 files since 3.3.2 update

Hi,

Since I have updated to 3.3.2, I can no-longer import any Panasonic RAW files from my LX5. The file suffix is RW2.

Selecting the card shows nothing on the selection window, nor any folders on folder part at the bottom of the import screen.

This is a reproducable issue as I have the 3.1 trial still on backup and if I delete 3.3.2 and reinstall 3.1, it all works as expected...

Use Software Update to let it update to 3.3.2 and RW2 files are no longer visible.

I can view RW2 files fine in Finder QuickView and Preview and they will import in iPhoto (latest version) fine as well, but not AP3.3.2

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

Darren

    Darren,

with the LX5 previously reregistering the "Core types bundle" with the OS has helped. You need the Terminal to do this:

Quit Aperture, if it is running.

Launch a Terminal (from the Launchpad, or from the Applications > Utilities folder, or typing "Terminal" into the Spotlight search field)

    Then enter:

    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -R /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library

All in one line and without spaces - the only spaces go directly before and after "-R" (the server inserts random blanks into long lines when downloading a post - remove them). Hit return.

Then reboot and try again, if Aperture recognizes the raw format now.

    Regards

    Thanks Leonie.

I forgot to mention that I had already tried this but hadn't rebooted...

Unfortunatly I have tried the command again, it runs successfully, but the problem still occurs after a reboot...

    Thanks

Darren, if you import using iPhoto and then open the library in Aperture, does Aperture show the rw2 files, or are they displayed as unsupported?

Have you run a system update - is your Mountain Lion version current?

And have you checked, if the 3.3.2 installation modified your preferences to exclude raw on import? Sometimes a new installation resets preferences to default:

Just to make sure, check these bricks in the Import panel, that might exclude certain file types from import

    importset.png

If all your settings appear to be correct and Aperture can handle your Raw, but refuses to import it, I'd remove the Aperture preferences from the User library, as described in the

    Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805

    On more thought:

Darren, did you upgrade to Aperture 3.2.2 before or after you upgraded to Mountain Lion. A poster reported, that the upgrade sequence is important. If you upgraded to Mountain Lion after you upgraded Aperture to 3.2.2, reinstall Aperture, this brought the raw support back for some posters.

    Hi,

Thanks for your suggestions, I tried them all but it didnt fix it...

Looking around on Google, I came across a blog from someone who said they had issues with AP3.3.2 importing from a HFS volume due to permissions.

Out of desperation, I formatted a USB stick to FAT32 and copied all the files/directory structure from the SD card to the USB stick and suddenly Aperture was not only able to see them on the USB stick, but import them as well!

I then tried reformatting the SD card to FAT32 (even though the camera does that anyway) and copied the files back and the SD worked that way as well.

Strange thing was that Aperture could import movies taken on the LX5 from the SD card before the format but couldn't see the RW2 or JPG files.

Looks like they have done something with the file handling between 3.1 and 3.3.2 that is sensitive to this sort of thing.

Anyway, fixed now - many thanks for your help.

That is an interesting solution! I am glad that it is working for you now.

Looks like they have done something with the file handling between 3.1 and 3.3.2 that is sensitive to this sort of thing.

I am not so sure about that. I tested with two different Lumix cameras right now - FZ28, FZ50; Aperture 3.3.2 on MacOS X 10.8 has no problem to import raw from the card. What I suspect is a coincidence - the file system on your card got corrupted - that may happen from time to time, and easily may happen, if you allow other applications to erase images from the card and not do it in the camera, and reformatting the card fixed this.

But it is much safer to have the camera reformat the card. In your case I would try now, if Aperture can read the card, if you reformat it in the camera.

Then you will no for sure, if Aperture and your camera are still compatible.

    Cheers

    Hi,

Reformatting the card in camera also works - looks like the card format got damaged somehow.

They have definitely changed something though between 3.1 and 3.3.2.

Originally, I uninstalled 3.3.2 and reinstalled 3.1 from CD. This version would read the card and import fine. If I then did a software update to 3.3.2, the RW2 and JPG files on the card could not be seen...

This was reproduceable on both my iMac and Macbook Air.

    Cheers

    Hi,

I have a similar problem here, but even preview (OSX 10.8) cannot read the Panasonic files from my LX3 ...

But with snapperdg's solution (formatting the card in the camera) the whole thing works again - thanks!
