Which version of the OS ?
Which version of iChat ?
New Computer but listing iChat suggests Lion and iChat 6
Does your college allow Video chatting ?
Some clamp down on it for "security" reasons, others as they see it as a Bandwidth drain.
Have you tested the college has the ports open for iChat ?

In this case the College/University/Campus is likely to be the issue and in that case you will have a different issue to the Original Poster of this thread.
I read and answer everything in the iChat Forum - you will not be missed.
I have been distracted since Mountain Lion was released also trying to keep up with "Messages" tagged posts in the Mountain Lion area.
Rarely do I get more than 24 hours behind.
