I'd love to hear an answer for this problem as well. I hate it when I leave my 5G in the dock and either switch users, shut down, or start up XP. With it docked, XP goes dark when shutting down and never succeeds. When booting up, XP just gets stuck on the blue boot-up screen.

There seem to be several posts regarding this issue. I haven't found a post with a solution yet.

I am having the same problem as well.. the "do not disconnect" appears on the ipod screen and the little icon on the top of the left hand corner will start to spin, then it will stop spinning and that's when my computer will freeze, yet the ipod will continue with the "Do not disconnect" and charge. I tried reseting it but it still will not work...My usb ports on my laptop don't work so I had to get a 2 new USBs on a cardbus attachment.. I wonder if that is why it's not working for me??

................

On Thursday this week I bought a 60G and have had nothing but failures of many types of errors until today. My laptop doesn't have a USB 2.0 port, so some time ago I bought a ADS Technology Dual-Link cardbus interface card for the PCMCI slot for use with my external disk drives and iPods. Turns out it was the source of all my iPod problems with freezes, corruptions during sync, etc on the new 60G. My 20G never had a problem. The ADS card works fine with my external drives but for some reason looses connection with the iPod during a sync (which then corrupts the iPod index file to the music).

To get around this problem, in desperation, I plugged the USB cable into a regular USB port (I think it's 1.1 version USB) and it worked fine for RESTORE of the factory defaults and for iTunes to iPod file sync (1.5 hours for about 2000 files; mostly music).

I've rebooted the computer a few times today and have added video and podcast files in iTunes and successfully sync-ed those files onto the 60G during the day.

Just relaying my experiences.

I have a HP desktop on XP and have exactly the same issue.
What Chuck advises works,as I did exactly the same process (SEE http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435240)

Loke you I dont have USB 1.1 built into my PC, so I brought a Beklin 4 way external USB hub, making sure it was 1.1. Ipod now works fine if not a little slow, should get an external 1.1 UBS for a few Pounds on ebay..... However with the amount of people have the same issue Apple need to work around this prodlem.

Good Luck
