Mail in Mountain Lion is a shambles.

Mail in Mountain Lion is a shambles. Rules do not work. If I receive a mail on one account, when I reply it defaults to my personal mac account, not the account under which the mail was received. I'm switching to Postbox until Apple sorts out Mail. The Mail client should at least be on a par with operating system - it's not; it's currently sub-standard and unusable in a professional context using multiple mail accounts.

How do rules not work? They're working fine here.

Regarding the mail replying problem, are the messages that are giving you trouble stored in a mailbox associated with the account that received them? If so, something's wrong on your system. However, there has been a change to how Mail composes replies... if you have moved those messages to an "On My Mac" mailbox, Mail will reply using the account specified in the "Send new messages from" setting in the Composing pane of Mail's preferences.

IMHO Mac/Apple Mail is the worst program ever written for anything. Always has been and from what I see in these forums still is and will be in the future.

I disagree. There are many email cliets availabe. I have used them all. Alll have some features over the other, but I prefer the most using Mail. I am not one for cartoons, I like Mail because it is simple, effecient, and exactly what I need. What email client do you use?

Perhaps the disk permissions need to be repaired? (see pic) User uploaded file

As for moving mail "onto your mac" this is more of a method to archive, organize or collect. I would avoid using this and only use the mailbox at top.

Also you might want to delete then re add your accounts here:

It's very intermittent.....some rules work seamlessly and drop the incoming mail straight in it's correct folder, others hang about in the in box until I run Apply Rules (in the Messages menu); others simply sit in the in box, defy Apply Rules (even though there is a rule) and it usually means deleting the existing rule and creating a new one to make it work.

The current version is abysmal but, in Apple's defence, I never had one problem with it in the 11 years I had my eMac. I've spent an hour on the phone with Apple Support today and, just as it looked as if they'd sorted all my problems, it's as bad as ever. What I am annoyed about is Apple's head-in-the-sand attitude to the problems in mail. They are in complete denial that there is a problem with the current version of mail and have insisted that the problems I've encountered can be fixed.

For the record, my own experiences include the following:

Slow downloading and delivery of messages.

Sent messages not appearing in the sent folder.

Phantom messages, i.e., the Activity bar showing that a message is downloading but none appears in any folder (or the trash).

Messages reappearing in my draft folder up to an hour after they were sent.

Mail application taking two or three minutes to close when I quit out of it.

What is really frustrating is that these problems are intermittent and so each time I call Apple Support the advisor thinks he's sorted the problem only for it to reappear again almost the minute I hang up. As a Mac user for over 20 years I expect better from Apple. We pay a premium to use Macs so the least we should expect is that they run smoothly.

Mail in Mountain Lion is a shambles.
