Mail's SMTP setting for ssl won't turn off

I am having problems sending emails and have found it appears that in the advanced pane of the SMTP settings the checkbox that says USE SECURE SOCKETS LAYER (SSL) is always checked. Whatever I do to change it, next time I come back it is checked again.

Is there something else controlling this setting? My SMTP does definitely NOT need SSL.

I have tried using custom port, but again although it lets me uncheck the box, as soon as I try to send the mail there are problems and looking at this pane again I find the SSL is once again checked.

I have tried adding a new SMTP server, but as soon as I change the popup to PASSWORD it refuses to let me uncheck the box.

Any ideas?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3), MacPro / MacBookAir etc

I dumped Netsol as a host and an email provider for similar issues, never could get the mail to behave but, that doesn't help you.

Archive and delete the account, remake it exactly as per Netsol requirements. (posted below)

When setting up:

  • POP - choose POP and the incoming server port will default to 110
  • IMAP - choose IMAP and the incoming server port will default to 143
  • All other settings are the same.

Note - Substitute your actual domain name for "yourdomain.com" and substitute the first part of your email address for "user."

  • Username = user@yourdomain.com
  • Password = the password you set up when you configured your mail box
  • Incoming Mail Server = mail.yourdomain.com
  • Outgoing Mail Server = smtp.yourdomain.com
    • Outgoing Server Requires Authentication (typically found in advanced options or settings)
    • Do NOT check "Log on Using Secure Password Authentication"
    • Use the same Username and Password as Incoming or select "Use Same Settings as Incoming"
  • Outgoing Server Port = 2525 or 587
    • This is subject to change based on the individual preferences of your ISP

You didn't say whether you are using POP or Imap, so both settings are posted.

Here are requirements specifically for POP access, no SSL here (you like sending mail in the clear?)

  2. Click the Accounts tab
  3. Click the plus icon to create a new account

  5. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
  6. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@example.com).
  7. Password: Enter your password.
  8. Click Continue
  9. Click on the account type and select pop
  10. Enter this information:

  12. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type "mail" followed by your domain name (e.g. mail.example.com)
  13. User Name: Enter your full email address
  14. Password: Enter your password.
  15. Click Continue
  16. Do not click the SSL box and click continue
  17. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type "smtp." followed by your domain name (e.g. smtp.example.com)
  18. Click on the use only this server bo
  19. Click the check box for Use Authentication box and enter in your user name and password
  20. Click Continue
  21. On the “Account Summary” screen make sure all information is correct and click continue
  22. On the accounts page click on your outgoing mail server and select Edit SMTP Server List
  23. Click on Advanced and click the radio button Use Custom Port and Change your outgoing server setting to 2525 or 587 if you are with Verizon you should change your port to 587

I'm not sure if this fixed it or not!

The SSL checkbox is STILL checked, but it seems to be sending emails ok anyway.

I noticed that the emails were not being sent from the same SMTP service as the email I was sending from, so changing this seems to have perhaps had more effect.

The SSL checkbox still appears to be a problem as technically I do NOT have SSL on this account.

Very odd!

Hi Colin

i have the same problems as you and actually if i uncheck the SSL box and wait a few seconds the tick is coming back on it's own.

did you solve your problems as I still have the problem and waht Mail does then it uses my gmail account to sent the mail now that is fine but there are two issues . In the sent folder it says it is sent from my account with the SSL issues but the recieiver gets the e-amil form my gmail account and they reply to that instead of my SSL account

any help would be appricated

HI

just to let you know anybody else which has similir issues it looks like we have pinned down the problem we have not solved it yet it looks like it is becuse i am going through a work network (strange though as it only happens on a mac) but when I go online directly withouth going through the network e-mails are coming in and mails are going out without any issues. So at least a step closer but we still do not understand why it happens only on a mac and not on the PC's

I am using POP. IMAP is not available at my service level, nsMail. I do not like sending email in the clear. Perhaps I should upgrade to nsMail Pro although it costs more. Or, perhaps I should follow your lead and dump Network Solutions. What keeps me with them is that I have a ".name" email address that I like. I don't think I can move it to another email provider.

My Network Solutions account is configured in accordance with the instructions you provided.

Thanks.
