Based on what you said and my trying it out in Excel, I'm not getting the big difference. In Excel & Numbers you have to select the cells to be cleared. In Excel & Numbers you click or use the menu system or a keyboard shortcut or the right-click contextual menu to clear the selected cells. What is the difference other than Excel has a few additional choices for what to clear and it has a toolbar icon (which takes two clicks to use, one to click the button and one to choose from a list of how to clear the cells)?

Numbers is limited on what icons can be on the toolbar so you cannot add a "Clear" button. But right-click and choosing "Clear All" from the contextual menu is no more steps than clicking on Excel's "Clear" button then choosing which method to clear the cells.

On the Home tab, in the Editing group, click the arrow next to the Clear button User uploaded file, and then do one of the following:

  • To clear all contents, formats, and comments that are contained in the selected cells, click Clear All.
  • To clear only the formats that are applied to the selected cells, click Clear Formats.
  • To clear only the contents in the selected cells, leaving any formats and comments in place, click Clear Contents.
  • To clear any comments that are attached to the selected cells, click Clear Comments.

It is included in the OS. If you give me an example of a cell you want to clear (document name, sheet name, table name, cell address) I can get you started.

Applescript differs from Macros in the following ways:

  • Macros are part of the spreadsheet. Applescript is not. If you share the spreadsheet with someone on a different computer, they will also need the script. If you set up a keyboard shortcut to activate the script, they would have to do that too if they want to use the shortcut.
  • Macros are recorded (or written) from within Excel, or they were the last time I did it. Applescript is written in the Applescript Editor or in Automator using the Applescript action. You can run a script from the script menu on the toolbar or, if you use Automator to create a service, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to that service.
  • Macros can be assigned to an icon on the toolbar. Numbers only has a few canned commands that can be put on the toolbar; you cannot have an icon for the script.

Depending on what you mean by "clear", either

1. Select them, press Delete

or

2. Select them, right click, Clear All. Clear All is also in the Edit menu. You could make a keyboard shortcut for Clear All so you don't have to right click or choose it from the menu, you would use your keyboard shortcut.

Neither is "one click" because you first have to select the cells.

I don't think I need it, I don't have access to my email right now anyway. Just give me example of a cell to clear so I can write a little script to clear that one cell. You would be able to follow the same format to add other cells to the script. One thing I do need to know is if it is just one table that needs to be cleared or if there are multiple tables and, if so, are they all on the same sheet. Maybe if you post a screenshot of part of you spreadsheet, including the sidebar on the left that lists the sheets and tables.
