red dot on home screen

I know missed calls etc. produce a prompt of a red dot usually with a number - i.e 1 for 1missed text etc. However over the phone icon i have a red circle which suggests a voicemail message. There are no outstanding voicemails and the red circle won't disappear. Any ideas?
