Can't account for 7GB of memory usage on iPhone 4s

My iPhone 4s shows that 12.2 GB of storage is being used, but all of the apps, music, video, only add up to about 4GB. How can I clean it up? I can't account for the other 7GB (accounting for system operation)???

It shows under Settings-Usage that 12.1 GB is used and 1.5 GB is available. I used a calculator to add up the itemized usage for music, video, apps, and my sum was 4+ GB (<5 GB). I see no explanation under Usage that tells me where the other 7 GB are used. They seem to be floating in space. A few weeks ago I deleted several TV shows from the phone, but I did so using iTunes on my MacBook tethered to my iPhone and I later noticed they still showed up under my Videos and I deleted them from the iPhone as well. They've all been deleted twice so they should be gone.

The Usage section in Settings > General does not show disk space usage for photos and videos present in Camera Roll library on your iPhone.

Hence it might well be that you have a large number of photos and videos present in default Photos app.

Thus, to free up space, backup photos and videos on your Mac and delete the same from iPhone.

Alternatively, if photos are not present and you have cleared all cache, try switching OFF iPhone and restart.

Hope it helps.

You can right click on iPhone when connected to computer iTunes and do a backup.

There are also 3rd party tools that can extract text messages, notes etc. Use Google or search this forum for solutions. I'm afraid not all data from some apps can be saved.

I don't think it can be avoid totally. If an app crashes, there is not much you can do about it unless you are the developer of that app. Anyway, it's always a good idea to have backup of important stuff.
