Q: Notes Disappearing!!

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I have had a recurring problem with Notes disappearing.  I use Notes on both my iPhone and my Mac (Google Apps, not iCould) for work.  Many of my (new) notes disappear from both devices within a couple days of me writing them.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

I am so glad I stumbled upon your comment because that is EXACTLY where I found my missing Notes...in my Yahoo 'Notes' folder. Since I have 2 yahoo accounts, I had to check both to ensure all missing notes were there and sure enough, there they sat!

This was a relief but NOW I'm afraid to create any new Notes in my IPad or IPhone......

Thanks ARRAZORBACK for posting your answer!

As someone else mentioned, it has to do with Sync. If you check to see which account your notes are syncing to, you will find your notes there.
I found my notes in my Gmail account, as a folder on the left hand side.

Afterwards I went back into my Notes app on iphone 4s (ios7). There is now a button on the top left hand side that says "Accounts". There you can choose from which account you want to show your notes. My notes are all back on my phone, I did not have to copy and paste them.

    Same problem here.

Haven't used notes because of this issue for a while. Just used it again because I didn't have anything else. Within minutes my new note disappeared again.

Quite an achievement if you think about it. Notes is probably the smallest/simplest application in all of OS X, besides the clock. And it can't even do the simplest of tasks, saving information in a text-file.

I think I've got the answer to this one, as I've had the same problem and it was driving me mad! It seems as if Notes automatically synchronises with your Yahoo account, and according to Yahoo, this is a one-way synchronisation. In other words it moves the note from your iDevice to a new folder called Notes in your Yahoo e-mail account.

The solution is therefore fairly simple - go to Settings / Mail, Contacts, Calendars / Yahoo and turn the Notes synchronisation off. NOTE that this will delete the Notes on your iDevice, but they should stay on Yahoo (might be worth e-mailing them to yourself beforehand just to be sure). You should the find that, if you look under Settings / Notes it will say iDevice only rather than Yahoo. So all Notes will then stay on your iDevice.

    Good luck!

For info, here's the explanation from the Yahoo website:

Once a new iDevice note is added, a new Folder in Yahoo Mail called "Notes" is created; all the notes will be shown under this folder immediately. However, the notes cannot be edited from your Yahoo Mail account because it's a one-way sync.

Note: Apple Notes application is designed so that when the sync is turned on to upload Notes to Yahoo, the iDevice doesn't keep a local copy.

That solution isn't going to work for me as I don't have a Yahoo account, or any other account that suppports notes.

Try looking under Settings / Notes / Default Account and see what it says...

Phantom-1 is correct, you should be able to see what default email account you are using on your iPhone or iPad. I have 2 email accounts set up, but Yahoo is the default account where my notes are synced. Even though my 2nd account is not set up as the default, there is a notes folder in that email account. It's empty, because as I said, it's not the default account, but the folder is there.

If you check your email account, and there is no notes folder, then you probably need to go to settings/mail, contacts/calendars. Choose the email account and check to see if notes is turned on. If not, turn it on, and your notes should sync to that account.

    Hope this helps....

I had your issue....upgraded  my iPAD3 to iOS7 and lost some random notes.  The advice on here is absolutely spot on.  It turned out to be my fault.  I had a gmail account and learned that ALL of my gmail messages would post during the upgrade.  Not wanting to take up the extra space, I disconnected that account right after the upgrade (and before realizing notes were missing).  After reading the advice above, I reconnected that same gmail account and voila...the missing notes reappeared.

So....if you are missing notes, make all over your previous e-mail accounts are synced after the upgrade.  My blood pressure has gone down tremendously as I thought I lost these notes forever.

    Good luck.

Brilliant. I found my notes not in Mail in iPad, but on my laptop in my BT Yahoo mail login.

Thanks to contributors for your help..

Apple are usually pretty good, but this is bloody annoying and needs fixing.

Just a thought - make sure that you sign in to Yahoo through a web browser rather than through your iDevice, as I don't think that the Notes folder always appears on your iDevice

Add one more to the list.

Notes there one minute, totally gone the next.

Obvioulsy for now on, dont use OSX notes for anything that you may need tomorrow....its just a quick scribble pad and thats it.

Come on Apple....you cant create a reliable text document ?

(I say that knowing Apple never reply to these threads ! :_)

I have the same problem.  BUT....It happens like this.

I deleted Yahoo from my email accounts because of this problem.  But then, I restored from the backup that had my lost notes.  This restores the Yahoo account, and the notes reappear in iPhone notes for maybe 5 sec.

NOW, get a load of this.  If I go to Yahoo in mail Accounts and turn OFF NOTES, a NOTES folder appears in Yahoo, but with no notes in it.  When I turn NOTES ON, the NOTES folder goes away. Huh?

So, the lost notes are in my backup, I just can't get them to go anywhere to be visible.  Logging on to Yahoo through the web based app makes no difference.

Real bummer because I had some future hit songs and bestselling novels in there.  Lol!
