my ipod wont sync

I have been having problems getting my itunes to know when my ipod is conected, itunes doesnt open automatically and doesnt sync and doesnt give me the option to sync either on itunes or on my ipod touch. I have checked the lead and removed any programs that would have settings preventing the ipod and itunes syncing. someone please help!!
