How do I message an iPhone user from my Messages application?

One of the features I was most excited about in Mountain Lion was the ability to message (or text) iPhone users straight from my Macbook Pro. When I go into the Messages application it tries to send the messages to 5551234567@gmail.com for Google Talk. How can I get it to send to their iPhone?
