Mac Power PC G5 Dual 2.3Ghz doens't back up anymore

I have an external hard disk which I have been using exclusively for Time Machine to do the back ups.

It was working fine but now I cannot do any back ups.

There's still plenty of space but when I start a back up, it is just in the stage of "preparing" but nothing get backed up.

The connection cable is a USB.

Any ideas what is wrong?

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), memory 8 GB DDR2 SDRAM
