No, you can only have apps on the homescreens, you can't save documents or shortcuts to documents on them - the only app that allows you to create additional homescreen icons is Safari (for creating homescreen shortcuts for websites).

No. Files need to be associated with an app. I use iBooks to view my PDF files but there are other apps.
If the PDF is on a website you could place a bookmark on your main screen to that site. But you'd have to download the PDF every time you viewed it.

No, you cannot save files to the home screen, period. You will need an app for storing the files. adobe Reader, GoodReader or iCab mobile are a few, but there are others. You might also look into DropBox.
OK. I get no document shortcuts. But is it possible for an app to create multiple icons for itself, each of which opens directly into a different document in its own sandbox folder? That wouldn't seem to violate the sandbox rules... And would provide pretty much the same convenience. I'm particularly interested in text files which are stored in SugarSync's private folder. The iFiles (with an 's') app can connect to them and sync them back...
