Q: My Macbook Pro is just now having this issue so it doesn't fall within the 4 years. Does anyone know if Apple will do anything about this to help me out with this issue now? Any help or guidance anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated! thanks

Here is the link to this known issue on the Apple website:

make an appointment at your local Apple store Genius Bar or call them and ask.  We can't guess what Apple may or may not do.

    I'm in the same boat.

Bought the laptop in May 2008.  Apple says that they will not cover the repair, since I'm a couple of months beyond the four year extension.  This despite the fact that Tech Article TS2377 clearly states, "Apple will continue to evaluate the repair data and will provide further repair extensions as needed."

Well, we need it, and not granting it is unacceptable.

They've known about this issue since July 2008.  At no time were we notified.

That connected me to the standard Support line, but I did get through to yet another advisor who again said that Apple would not cover the repair, though was unable to say why not despite my repeated requests for an explanation beyond, "No, we won't."

He was also unable to explain what "Apple will continue to evaluate the repair data and will provide further repair extensions as needed" means aside from the obvious.  This is shameful, Apple.

you called asked if they would repair it, they said "no we won't" and when you asked why, what did they say?  Also, your computer is out of warranty and this extended repair is expired so you really have no grounds to argue.

I'd ask you to read this thread carefully, Shoulder, for therein lies the answer.

Unfortunately I guess it will be up to a small claims judge to consider what's fair.  In my experience, small claims judges are  prone to excessive reliance on common sense, and common sense in this case says that Apple has a duty to make this repair at no charge, no matter what their arbitrary policy may be.

Sorry about that.  I forgot they changed their phone system.  That number use to be a direct number.  Now you have to........

Wait for a human to come on the line and ask politely and firmly that you want to be transferred over to the Customer Relations department.

I have the same issue.  It started last week, and I am 47 days over the arbitrary 4-year cutoff.  I took it to the Apple Store today - they agreed this is the issue, but all they could say was "It is past 4 years and we won't fix it under warranty".  I purchased the extended warranty for just this sort of thing.  They offered to fix it for $310, which I refused.  I don't know why they would bother to say "It is a known defect and we will fix it free of charge" in this article today, but tell them something different once you arrive at the store.  VERY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!  I'm not likely to buy my daughter a Mac when she is ready for college.

And you realize this "threat" holds no weight against other users here, and Apple doesn't read this?

This is why I don't go on these threads normally because someone always has to be rude. Your negative comments (as well as Csound1's comment) are not helping so please don't bother replying to this thread unless you have something helpful to contribute. dshupp is just showing their frustration - which you don't understand because you are not in our shoes. It helps to know I'm not alone as it seems Apple will not be helping us. The bottom line is, the defect was Apple's fault from day 1 and we are being punished for their oversight. We are clearly also Apple fans, we're just disappointed in how they are handling this and looking for alternative solutions besides having to go out and buy another one. We shouldn't have to.
