AOL is great for getting used to a few of the basic ideas on the Internet.

But I would never recommend AOL to anyone who has been using a computer for a while. There are some slight setup issues with other tools, but when you get beyond that you almost never have to deal with that again.

Try out Safari. If you don't like it, look at Firefox, a free download.

AOL hasn't offered their own browser in years. AOL is now just a web site, a portal to their services:

http://www.aol.com

So you need to use one of the several standard browsers. Hence Grant's suggestion of other browsers if you can't or do not wish to use Safari is right on point. AOL does offer a packaged version of Firefox which includes their own toolbar and settings, if that's what you're looking for.

You may have a problem here

You do not need (and there may not be) AOL software for your Mac. Just browse to www.aol.com, your stuff is there.

Use any browser you desire.

Once you sort out that you don't need any AOL software because the sytem requirements for their software state:

Are you trying to pick up AOL emails?

Apple Mail can do that for you. It takes little set up, but you only have to do that once, and then it is trouble-free.

There should be directions in AOL help.

I think the poster above is on to something. My mom had AOL until recently, and I used to help her sort her stuff out when she had problems. I remember that AOL had their own program that was both browser and email client. Is that what you're looking for?

It would seem they still make that program for Mac, but I think I also heard you say it's not working that well. If you really want to get that type of interface back, then a complaint to AOL would be one place to start. Skimming through the article it seems they have a new version out, and it might not be bug free yet. So they need to hear from you as to what problems you're experiencing.

Until they get it "fixed", if you can't abide using the AOL software, then I'd recommend what others have: use any other internet browser to access their web page and the internet. You can also do web mail off of their home page (aol.com). OR, as suggested above, use an email client like "Mail" or "Thunderbird" to get your mail (from my quick scan of various articles, it would seem you can use just about any email client with AOL). So you'll end up with two programs running somewhat separately instead of one, but in my opinion it will work better than AOL's program once you get used to it.

Does that help, or is there something else you're getting at?
