macbook pro stops working and the screen becomes all checkers and jumbled

When I'm using my macbook pro ('07) the screens colors get all scrambled and it stops reponding to my commands, and the pinwheel spins. Does anybody know what causes this? could it be overheating? I've never had any problems with the computer. Its never been wet or dropped...
