How can I disable mail.app?

Close it

Go into the preferences for it, delete all of the accounts that have been set up,and close it.

Just don't start mail.app or set it up with any accounts, it will just stay in the application folder unused.

I cant´t understand why mail should launch if you quit it. Unless you´re only closing the mail window, of course.

Well, I´am at loss. I get my mail notifications all the time when Mail is up, but never when Mail isn´t running and nothing is triggering the app. Perhaps I´m missing something here.

Hey, I too have mail.app open on its own even though it is not the default email program and I do not "open" or "click" on it. I also--I don't think--have any accounts configured. When it opens all I see is the "Welcome to Mail" page.

Major annoyance.

Do you have any recommendations or suggestions on how to prevent mail.app from opening?

Well, if you don't want Notification Center to notify you about anything relating to Mail, then go to System Preferences > Notifications and make sure that everything is UNchecked and None is selected as seen here:

That is the way to turn off Notifications (and, unfortunately, the only way). I do not get any notifications of any kind because I do not care to be interrupted.

If you want to disable other apps besides Mail, you will need to do the same thing for each one. A bit annoying, but it works.

Unfortunately it is not a notification that comes up, if only. The problem is that mail.app opens up as if I were going to send an email. But, because I don't have any accounts configured with mail.app, I get the "Welcome to Mail" where I am prompted for full name, eamil address, and password in order to set up a mail account.

Are you saying that you disabled Mail in Notifications and it still opens? I've had it disabled for some time and it has never opened.

Additionally, I'm at a loss how Mail can open if you don't have it set up - how can someone send you an email resulting in a notification if you don't have an account set up - and, therefore, no email address associated with Mail.

Do you have an iCloud account/email (which usually is configured by default to go through Mail.app) or, for that matter, any other email account. As long as you have IMAP/icloud, things are set up to go through Mail.app by default. You need to check whatever accounts you have and see what the settings are.

I'm not being clear. I am not receiving notifications from mail.app. The program is opening to simulate sending a new email. But because I do not have any accounts set up, I get the welcome page. Again, I am not recieving notifications; the program is opening as though I were trying to send an email.

Okay, so you're saying you have no accounts that would prompt Mail to open, do not have it set up/activated, and it opens anyway?

That is a problem; however, not sure if it is the same as the OP's here since that appears to involve Notification Center. So, instead of making the OP's thread more confusing, I'd suggest you post your very valid question by starting a new thread - that way answers can focus on your problem only. Make sure you include as much info as possible including what I mentioned in my first paragraph here.
