How can I disable mail.app?

I want to disable mail.app. I don't buy that it's "needed by OS X." I want it shut off, or preferably uninstalled. I found a better app that still lets me read newsgroups, and mail.app just gets in the way. I had to go in and tell Google Calendar to shut off email notifications to stop the Notification Center from opening mail.app without me wanting it.

I might consider re-enabling mail.app, but not now. Maybe not ever. I bought a Mac so applications would only run when I want them. This is not it.

I had not actually launched mail.app since installing Mountain Lion. Before Mountain Lion, I had Lion, which didn't launch mail.app because it didn't have the centralized Notification Center. Overall, I like 10.8 and Notification Center, but I didn't like their effect on mail.app, particularly since I had been using Postbox as my default since 10.7.3.

I think for my needs, just unchecking the "Enable this account" box on all my accounts works (or should) for my needs. But this kind of kludgery shouldn't be necessary. If I select a different default mail application, mail.app just shouldn't run. Ever. Period. I thought the point of having OS X was to let the other guys screw up their operating systems while we glide by with no trouble.

Because I have Mountain Lion, which has Notification Center, and I have Google Calendar, which emails notifications by default unless you tell it not to, which triggers Notification Center to call up mail.app even if it's not your default mail application (because while it's a great idea, Notification Center still acts like a beta--not enough options available and not properly implemented).

So since Apple has either made mail.app part of OS X (which I recall Microsoft got sued for when they did it with Internet Explorer!), or they're lying when they say it's "necessary," the only solution is to delete or disable all accounts in mail.app.

Again, workarounds should be for other operating systems. 😉

Hey, I too have mail.app open on its own even though it is not the default email program and I do not "open" or "click" on it. I also--I don't think--have any accounts configured. When it opens all I see is the "Welcome to Mail" page.

Major annoyance.

Do you have any recommendations or suggestions on how to prevent mail.app from opening?

Much thanks,

Me

Well, if you don't want Notification Center to notify you about anything relating to Mail, then go to System Preferences > Notifications and make sure that everything is UNchecked and None is selected as seen here:

User uploaded file

That is the way to turn off Notifications (and, unfortunately, the only way). I do not get any notifications of any kind because I do not care to be interrupted.

If you want to disable other apps besides Mail, you will need to do the same thing for each one. A bit annoying, but it works.

Unfortunately it is not a notification that comes up, if only. The problem is that mail.app opens up as if I were going to send an email. But, because I don't have any accounts configured with mail.app, I get the "Welcome to Mail" where I am prompted for full name, eamil address, and password in order to set up a mail account.

Nonetheles, thank you for your reply.

Are you saying that you disabled Mail in Notifications and it still opens? I've had it disabled for some time and it has never opened.

Additionally, I'm at a loss how Mail can open if you don't have it set up - how can someone send you an email resulting in a notification if you don't have an account set up - and, therefore, no email address associated with Mail.

Do you have an iCloud account/email (which usually is configured by default to go through Mail.app) or, for that matter, any other email account. As long as you have IMAP/icloud, things are set up to go through Mail.app by default. You need to check whatever accounts you have and see what the settings are.

Okay, so you're saying you have no accounts that would prompt Mail to open, do not have it set up/activated, and it opens anyway?

That is a problem; however, not sure if it is the same as the OP's here since that appears to involve Notification Center. So, instead of making the OP's thread more confusing, I'd suggest you post your very valid question by starting a new thread - that way answers can focus on your problem only. Make sure you include as much info as possible including what I mentioned in my first paragraph here.
