Do I need Airport Express?

I am connected to the internet via a BT Home Hub 3 Router, connected via ethernet.

My son, when visiting, can instantly log on his MacBook Pro and iPhone to the wi-fi via that router.

I cannot. This G5 iMac has an Airport card installed. I would like to occasionally be able to use the iMac in a different room.

You use a pair of these adapters plugged into mains sockets - the adapters have ethernet sockets.

So:

Room A:

Router----->ethernet cable----->mains powerline network adapter-----> data tarvels across mains wiring

Room B:

data across mains wiring----->adapter------->ethernet cable------>computer or other device with ethernet

Basically they provide an easy way of having a wired connection without running a long cable.

Admittedly a long cable might be cheaper but these really are 'plug and play'.

Prices vary, there are many other vendors eg Belkin, Netgear etc

I always had issues with the microwave disrupting wifi signals with the AppleTVs and it was not practical to lay ethernet cable. You use 2 as a minimum but can just add others in where you need another ethernet point.

Check out some Amazon reviews, eg for a single adapter:

(they tend to be cheaper in pairs).
