It is normal to have some "other".
Much more than 1 gb indicates corrupt files. A restore should resolve.
I have had this issue for months. I finally found the answer down thread in this forum. CLEAR YOUR TEXT THREADS. The phone saves copies of texted videos! I had over 12 GB of "other" storage that is finally free again!
On an earlier version of IOS, I found that reinstalling all my old apps and re-deleting them worked. I had restored my phone from a backup and not put all the apps back on that I had had before. These apps still had their data saved on my phone, which was creating lots of 'other'. Reinstalling the apps allowed this stray data to be associated with something I could then delete. Hope that helps someone.
DiskAid is a transfer tool for iPhone, iPad, and iPod. It is available for both PC and Mac platforms. It will allow you to see pretty much everything that is on your iPhone. Once you have DiskAid installed go ahead and plug in your iPhone and make sure you back it up. Now go ahead and open DiskAid. On the far left you will see a bunch of different icons. Click on File System, they may be a box that pops up that asks you if you know what you are doing. Just click ok because we know what we are doing here. Now click on Media, then iTunes_Control, then Music. You will see a bunch of folders (like in the photo below), go ahead a delete them all.
You will notice the size of “Other” has dropped dramatically!

I'll be an SOB if I didn't ' just stumble upon the solution to this issue that's been plagueing me since I bought the iphone by reading the previous poster's comments. THANK YOU!
I do a lot with itunes and music files. I am a musician so often record rehearsals using voice memos and I often convert the m4a files to mp3 so they can be shared. Then I delete the originals.
The first time around I had 11.2GB in "other" that I could not access and could not clear. The Apple store "geniuses" were absolutely no help except to throw a new phone at me and tell me to restore. I told them I KNEW what caused it - I watched it add 1GB to the "other" meter as I deleted files from my Music Library in itunes. I wrote to Apple. My suspicion - the iphone is caching the files I delete someplace that is unaccessible to me. No response and they did not take me seriously.
6 months later, I again have 8GB in "other" memory that I cannot access. I have only 1GB space left on the phone so I had to do something.
I came upon an application called "DiskAid", http://www.digidna.net/. It claimed to let a person have access to the files on the phone. I did not want to go thorugh another phone restore, which was the only solution, according to Apple, so I paid the $30 and tried it.
Sure enough, the App does what it claims. It let me easily back up all my media, including voice memos, THEN I went to its "File System" and found that thousands of files were stored under "File System" , "Media", "Recordings". These are files that were not accessible to me through any Apple sanctioned means and which could not be cleared by a human using Apple's tools.
There were obviously duplicates of duplicates (could tell by the dates and file sizes) and I deleted them all. I am now the proud owner of an iphone with only 2GB of other. Yes, it cleared 6GB of "other" memory and I do not need to do a restore.
I will now recopy the media files I want to keep to my playlists and music folders.
Corruption... NO. Apple Bug, YES.
AWESOME! My only advise to people who are not totally comfortable working with files, BE CAREFUL in the File System folders, like the app warns you.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
This little app saved my bacon!!! I was not looking forward to doing another phone restore. It is time consuming and cumbersome!!! And you have to reset everything up again. Nope, you can't user your backup or the "other memory" comes back! It is concrete.
It worked like a charm. I KNEW what was causing the "other" to soar but I could never get my hands on the files.
Now I can and it worked like a jewel... freed up 6GB of "other" just like that!!!
I AM JAZZED!
You are welcome

In my case, I follow pramuc method but recover 200Mb only. So I using DiskAid to search my iphone and find out that it store over 5.2G of voice memo, so I copy all to PC and delete them all from the iphone, recover all 5.2G.
Thanks this little software suggest by pramuc.
like my post if u resolved
DiskAid worked, thank u so much!
If I were to delete all the files in this directory, doesn't it delete all my music files and not my inactive memory?
