Unfortunately the 750 GB Momentus and the Mac have compatibility issues and sometimes this drive will not work well. A solution has not yet been found but it is constantly being worked on.
I would suggest to exchange the drive to a 500 GB Momentus with your original place of purchase. The 500 GB drive should be functioning without any issues.
I bought my Seagate momentus XT ST750LX003 in november and replaced my stock 5400 rpm drive the MBP early 2011 came with. It has worked flawlessly since then with SL 10.6.8, my battery life is exactly the same, i.e. 7 hrs 5 min (listening to music, typing in MS Word, wireless on, display at 50%). There is a slight vibration if I keep on my desk, not noticeable if i hold it in my lap. Overall, very pleased with the drive.
Thanks for posting that technical support email ! That explains so much. I was having some really weird problems with this disk. I wanted it to replace a 500 GB spin-only disk that was working fine because of the reported speedup and the bigger size. WOOPS! What a waste of time. This is an EPIC FAIL for seagate. I had some good experiences with some of their drives in the past, but this is crazy. No mention on the support sites, unexplained lack of firmware update to fix this... And yet, I can properly interact with the hard drive when I put it in an external enclosure. This is 100% their problem! Plenty of other manufacturers have no problem making hard disks that work in Mac OS just fine. Like the non SeaGate disk I'm going to replace this one with right now...
