what i couldn't figure out is that all my technical specifications matched or exceded the unibody macbook which is compatable with mountaon lion?
unibody macbooks have different specs than the 2008 white macbook.
even ram specs are different - 1066MHz DDR3 for 2008 Macbook Uni and 667MHz DDR2 for Macbook White.
Your graphics card, which is the intel x3100 is not supported by Mountain Lion
While the graphics card in the Macbook Uni which is Nvdia 9400 is supported.

You're fine with Lion - you're not missing anything with Mountain Lion.....
Just have a look at the people in this thread having issues when they installed Mountain Lion...
